The vagina is one of the most sensitive parts of the body of a woman. If it is not taken care of properly, it could lead to different vaginal issues such as the ones discussed here.

    Vaginitis

This is characterized by an itchy or burning pain in the vagina. It is commonly caused by hormonal imbalance which may be due to using pills as a contraceptive, pregnancy, and menopause as well as weak immune system. It is of different types including Bacterial vaginosis, yeast infection which is caused by an overgrowth of a fungus called Candida, Trichomoniasis and atrophic vaginitis which occurs when one has a low level of estrogen. Most of these are treated with a dose of antibiotics.

    Vulvodynia

Vulvodynia presents as a burning pain in the vagina. In some cases, it can be so severe that one can neither sit comfortably nor have intercourse at all. The exact cause is not known but in some cases, it can be attributed to spasms in the pelvic floor muscles or Candida hypersensitivity.

    Vaginismus

It is such a rare condition that occurs when the muscles surrounding the vagina spasm involuntarily and so tightly making it impossible to insert a tampon or even have sexual intercourse. Similar to Vulvodynia, there is no exact known cause. However, structural abnormalities can be corrected by an exercise program that helps in retaining too weak or too tight muscles.

    Vaginal Dryness

This causes irritation, pain and sometimes causes slight bleeding during sexual intercourse. It is important to note that it occurs in women of all ages and notjust those past the menopause age. The known causes include some medicines like antidepressants, breastfeeding, and using birth control pills that have progestin only.

    Fibroids

These are basically uterine tumors that are mostly non-cancerous. They come about due to increased hormonal production in women of childbearing ages. Some disappear naturally after menopause. However, in cases where there is excessive bleeding or very painful menstrual periods, treatment may be sought. The treatment may include hysterectomy which involves removing the uterus or embolization which cuts off blood supply to the fibroid causing them to shrink. Ultrasound treatment can also be considered as the fibroid are destroyed by heat.
